Enclosure

This dry-laid stone garden enclosure, more of a "garden framework" than a true enclosure, sets the stage for future gardens on this stunning farm property in midcoast Maine.

The client found us through my affiliation with The Stone Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and advancing the craft of dry stone walling. After attending a workshop on building dry-laid walls, she fell in love with them and knew she needed one on her property. When she discovered our work, we quickly connected over our shared appreciation for the art of stonework.

Our goal for this project was to strike a balance between formal and informal. The walls sit on the site of an old barn. We didn’t want to create full scale ruins, but we wanted to evoke a sense that some kind of structure had been here before. To achieve this, we combined chunks of reclaimed granite with weathered fieldstone, and allowed the dry-laid walls to tail off rather than terminating with perfect wall-ends.

Once again, I had the privilege of working alongside Steve Sclar of Firfolk Stonework. Steve is not only a true craftsman, he’s a great guy to spend a full day wrestling rocks with. Steve put a lot of time, effort and thought into these walls. They’re better for it.

I can’t wait to come back and see what this space looks and feels like after the gardens are established.
