Thea’s Stone Labyrinth
Blackberry Mountain Resort, Walland, Tennessee
In the fall of 2021, I joined a team of stoneworker-artists in the Smoky Mountains to assist Vermont-based stone artist Thea Alvin in constructing a monumental dry stone sculpture titled "Time for Love" at Blackberry Mountain Resort near Knoxville, Tennessee.
This expansive labyrinth serves multiple purposes. For resort visitors, it offers a serene, meditative space for relaxation, contemplation, and wonder—an unexpected work of art nestled within the landscape. Over six weeks, our ten-member team meticulously moved more than two million pounds of stone, primarily by hand, all sourced from the adjacent hillside.
Beyond its role as a meditative space, the labyrinth holds deep personal significance for the resort's family. To honor the memory of a departed family member, we incorporated two windows into the labyrinth's design. On his birth and death anniversaries, the rising sun shines through the respective window, casting light onto a central boulder bench—a poignant tribute that I am profoundly grateful to have contributed to.
This project stands as a testament to the power of collaborative artistry and the enduring beauty of stone craftsmanship.
