Stone Wall Collaboration in Downeast Maine
Why do so many dry stone wallers love working with each other? Is there another trade or craft where so many participants actively seek out opportunities to work with “the competition” ? Stone workers getting together and working on each others projects is a thing right now. Collaboration is having a moment.
Maybe it’s the influence of social media. Maybe it’s a legacy of The Stone Trust, an organization that brings so many of us together to learn and train it’s only natural that we seek to continue developing those relationships in the field. Or, maybe the solitary nature of the work drives us to seek connection with others engaged in the same pursuits we’re engaged in.
I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had for travel projects in Tennessee and Wyoming. It’s given me the chance to work with people from around the country. People that are older and more experienced. People that are younger and full of energy and talent. People that have inspired me, taught me, and become my friends.
Last summer I took advantage of another opportunity like this right here in Maine. Dan Morales Walsh of Maine Stone Scapes (based in Cape Elizabeth) put together a team of stone professionals from around the North East to build a series of massive granite dry laid stone walls in Bucksport, Maine.
I was really impressed with the way Dan led this project he undertook for Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design. I’m looking forward to working with everyone involved again.
