Firepit
We’re loving this stone fire pit on Westport Island. Nestled into a natural outcrop of boulders, it overlooks the Sheepscot River towards Boothbay and Southport.
The design challenge was to:
1 . Make it look natural. So we kept things simple, using just enough stone to make it functional.
2. Use stone harvested on site. Other than the flagging, all the stone for this project came from the property.
3. Go with the flow: We started this project without a solid plan. The owners knew they wanted “something, somewhere over here.” While trying to figure out the best location for the firepit, a boulder slipped out of the grasp of the excavator, rolled down the ledge, and landed snuggly against a boulder outcropping. Ok, the firepit goes here. We left that rolling stone alone and the rest of the project fell into place almost as easily.
