Granite Steps in South Bristol

With winter coming, and our order backed up at the saw shop, we decided to cut and shape this reclaimed granite into steps ourselves.

Stone delivery

We picked out this antique granite from a once abandoned and now reopened quarry in Fitzwilliam, NH and had it delivered to South Bristol, ME.

11 footer

This beauty is 11 feet wide.

Feathers and wedges

We use diamond tipped saws and heavy equipment when necessary, but this old technology is often the most effective.

Drilling

A series of holes about 4” deep determines where the stone will split.

Split

The feathers and wedges are inserted into the holes and tapped repeatedly with a hammer.

Two granite fillers complete the sides of the first step.

Ideally, we would have this stone sliced by a giant blade in a saw shop, but we are the saw shop for this project. We’re notching this stone all the way around so we’ll have a nice consistent rise as it sits on the bottom step.
