Maine stone art

I’m a solitary person by nature. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t like people. I love being part of a team, figuring things out with my co-workers, and collaborating with clients. It does mean that I also need time alone. That time can be used on a creative project, reading, a walk in the woods, a long drive or a good Netflix binge. I like to be social and I seek solitude. I need both in my life.

I’ve held on to this quote from Emerson for years:

It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

Making this pebble and driftwood art fits my personality. I’m rewarded through the whole process. There’s a ride to the coast. A walk to gather materials. Putting those materials together with no plan, no expectations, no timeline, no goal. This is when I feel most myself. The hard part, as Emerson said, is holding on to that feeling when you enter the world at large.
