Stonework at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens - Boothbay, ME

We’re back.

It’s been almost ten years (how did that happen!) since our first project at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. This summer we teamed up with Brewster and Emma from Prospect Design to help bring their vision for new trail makers to life.

You’ve heard all the excitement about the trolls, right? These stone columns were designed to look like the trolls could have stacked them up, as you can see from Prospect’s rendering. And there’s Brandon doing his best troll impression.

Justin the Stone Sourcer and the folks at Stone Curators shipped us up some antique granite blocks reclaimed from a decommissioned bridge outside Boston. We split them onsite the old school way. It’s still the best way. Then we stacked them on poured concrete slabs and pinned them with thick steel rods… I wish it was as easy as that made it sound.

The Gardens were open while we built these. There were a lot of visitors. Most were looking for trolls and oblivious to what we were doing, but some people took an interest. One gentlemen, when these funky columns were almost complete, came up to me and said, stone faced, “ did you guys forget your level?”

Luke Winnie, mad metal man, fabricated these COR-TEN steel arches lettered with the name of the new trail, “Back Woods.”

Brewster and Emma did an amazing job with the design and project management. We’re really looking forward to phase two next year.
